New scratching post!

Santa Claws dropped this on through the rubbish chute!
(Since no chimneys in Singapore)

Cat's reactions:
1. Very intimidated by this large sized thing coming into the house .
2. After I rubbed some cat nip on it, their curiosity got the better of them and they came sniffing around at the post. Hmm. Not so scary after all.
3. A rather vain tortoiseshell cat sat prettily on the soft pad. Just sat there looking pretty.

4. After about 30 minutes, only Cookie Monster seems to realise that it is a scratching post and not a pretty thing sitting there.

Really worth it for this scratching post,
thirty-ish for such a big one: )

Household Saving Tip #1

After feeding your cats a canned food meal,
you will notice that 3 out of the 4 bowls still have food residue.

Save up to 50% water with this tip:

Pass all bowls to Momo.
He will lick the bowls to the cleanest he can.
This way, you use less water trying to rinse off the food residue before washing with soap! :)

Happy 3rd Birthday Momo!

We guess he was born around 27 or 28 December 2009.
On the last day of 2009 I remember passing by a box with a black petite cat and two closed eyed kittens on my way to work.
That was the story of how we got our alarm clock.

5 Things Momo Should Improve on
1. Stop trying to snatch our food. Imagine a nice peaceful pizza dinner on Christmas. Then Momo comes so you hold out one hand while munching to keep his head away from the table. Then Momo uses his head to push hard against your hand. And you push hard back against his head.

2. Stop freaking out
He's okay but when he sees the nail cutter coming, or I don't know what else - our big Momo seems easily terrified - he. freaks. out.
Our rule is, once he start to freak out, quickly put him back on the floor, or earn a sergeant rank from him.

3. Sit at appropriate places.
I take out some work to do. Momo joins me on the table. He sits/lies right on my stuff, so that I can't read a word at all. WHAT IS THIS??!!

4. Play nicely.
His different idea of playing gently has always been the cause of Miaomiao and Pepper not liking to play with him.

5. Be nice to feline guests
Though him getting very crabby whenever cats are boarded or fostered in our house is really due to a negative experience he had, no fault of his. He would keep growling and get angry when Cookie Monster tries to play with him. What I noticed that he gets MORE UPSET when feline tourists get canned food meals.
We can always order more cans isn't it *rolls eyes*

Sat down at the table,
wanting to do some work.
Then Momo came over from Popo's bed and shamelessly flopped down on my book,
covering whatever words there was on the book.
Then he continues his nap..

Pepper is trying to tell me we need to get a new scratching post for them.

I was sitting on a stool,
then Pepper gets up standing on his two feet
and uses my back as a makeshift scratching post
I guess he really can't stand using the one we bought from Taiwan in June last year, it's really worn

Pepper's little happinesses

Every night when I open the closet To look for clothes to wear the following day,
I always have to act like some sort of goal keeper,
Cos Pepper will always try to enter the closet when you are busily looking for clothes

On a few occasions in fact,
we couldn't find him around the house
til we decided to look at the closet; he has this special ability to get in without anyone noticing

Sometimes to prevent him from going in,
and at the same time understanding that he has a fetish for clothes (same way he has with smelly shoes and dirty cotton buds) ,
I will carry him up (to the hanger level of the closet)
and let him near
Then he would reach out his paw to touch the clothes
(and probably) go like
"OH it's heaven!!

I don't know what is the big deal with touching those clothes,
but it does seem to make him happy: )

Miaomiao Shows Her Maternal Side

It's been a while since little Pudding
(who says his surname is Pu, name Ding Ding)
came into our house.

Anyway he has found a home now,
and is due to go over in about a week's time.

There was one day Miao Miao decided to be nice
and started licking Pudding.
This is something Miaomiao only does
if she sees the newcomer worthy of her time.

Anyway, Pudding committed a mistake all silly kittens do,
and that was to think Miaomiao was playing with him,
and started kicking her face.

Of course that incurred Miaomiao's instant wrath,
which earned him a whack on the head.

Caught Miaomiao sniffing at Pudding's litter tray one day,
then she started helping him to bury his pee more properly
(since cats are quite big on burying their pee and poop properly to hide the smell)
then she sniffed again.
Satisfied that the smell was better hidden,
she went off and continued with her own stuff.

That was her way of showing concern for the little kiddo: )

The special thing about Momo

Momo was quite a different kitten when he came.

When he was only about two month old,
he learnt to climb to heights that Pepper and Miaomiao
had mastered after three months of age.

When he learnt to play with the bigger cats,
he would jump on them and bite til they yelp.
(The consequences of removing a kitten from its mama before two months - no social skills)

Not to forget
he always had his self-created happy hour sessions,
during which he would sprint crazily around the house for fifteen minutes straight.

As a result he was abit of an outcast with Pepper and Miaomiao,
who was both actually willing to accept the newcomer,
before he showed his 'wild' character.

But yet,
as much as Momo showed himself to be a tough lil' kitten who can climb and run,
he had that soft side in him:
he was the cat who whimpered and crouched timidly on my lap during car rides,
he was the cat who whacked the vacuum cleaner when no one was in sight,
he was the cat who begged for every extra scrap of food he could get,
and last but not least,
he was the cat who loved Cookie Monster like a real younger brother. <3 p="p">
I really did not expect that he would be the one to bond the most strongly with Cookie Monster;
he was the one who growled at the newcomer every day,
and showed his displeasure each time he saw him,
until Cookie Monster's eagerness to follow this Big Brother around
melted away Momo's resistance against the adorable newcomer.

I guessed he really liked it that he finally had a new playmate
who didn't find his way of playing rough.

Occasionally when he walked past Cookie Monster
he would rather nonchalantly give him a few licks.
Yet that few licks was actually Momo's show of love towards him
(despite the bad breath he was reputed for having)

Momo would have won at any cat wrestling if given the chance,
yet he would always give in to Cookie Monster during their daily wrestles
and let Cookie Monster score some kicks in his face.

He has always been the one who earned the most butt-whacks for being so naughty,
but yet, with his innocent quirks, what is not to love?
Mama I want to go overseas too...

The Pink Shirt

Cookie Monster looking a little morose in his pink shirt.

Lately Cookie Monster had been wrestling too much with Momo
that he now looks like a cross between a Beijing 101 potential customer and a homeless cat.

So Miss Almond the JRT had kindly donated her skin cream,
and we are applying it on him to see if it helps things.

Thing is, as a normal cat,
he keeps licking that bald patch each time we apply it for him.

So the solution was... either a e-collar, or a shirt.

I think a shirt, though pink, was the less of the two evils.
And the weather was pretty cool this morning due to the heavy rain

Wrote a note to Popo to strip Cookie Monster later in the day.

So there!
See how he is going to lick his back!

The holy paw

It's so stressful being close up with Miaomiao sometimes.

Yesterday Miaomiao was lying on the shoe cabinet.
I kissed her head, pressing down on it slightly.

She immediately sat up straight,
and raised her holy paw preparing to whack my face.

I quickly stepped back to avoid the coming 'attack'.

She stretched out her paw and tried to reach out a bit further
to her mama who was avoiding punishment

When there is a will there is a way

For the last two months,
the two mamas who thought of buying a $2 metal bar board from Daiso were being so smug of themselves,
thinking themselves to be very ingenious.

But Miaomiao says,
If there is a will, there is a way!

and so she now tries to climb over the metal rectangle.

So far she has not succeeded.
So weird that all the while she had sort of given in to her mamas' smartness and then probably some goddess appeared in her dream last night and so today she suddenly had an inspiration how to try to get out

Rolling in the corridor dust.
So near, yet so far...

the second honourable victim

Now I understand Emily 's pain.
For the past two nights she was not at home,
so due to order of age/usual wake-up time/preferences /light-sleeperness,
Momo decided to make me the next honourable victim for the weekend.

So at 6-7am he stationed himself next to me
and screamed his lungs out.
Not waking up?
He proceeded to my legs to nip at them.
STILL not waking up?
He moved to in front of my face,
and like Emily,
I too worried that he would bite my nose.
So I nudged his face away and politely asked him to shut up.
Of course he got what he wanted within a few minutes.

I dragged myself out of bed,
poured kibbles for all of them,
and went back to sleep.

Bright eyes

It's very encouraging that the time
when we took Cookie Monster to the vet for his eye problem,
we bought the prescribed eye drop which the vet told us not to hold too much hope
that it would help at all,
but at least we were doing something about his eye condition.

Surprisingly, we could see significant effects.
His eye is not so cloudy anymore.

Good news as it is,
it is most likely just a temporary effect,
since the cloudy thing in his eye will form back
when he is no longer on the eye drop prescription.

I don't know if the eye drop can be used long-term though.

At least for now something was done about his eye.

thou shalt not incur my wrath

Proceeded for yet another of regular nail clipping session last night.
Peppee and Cookie Monster are less troublesome;
they always let me clip their nails while lying down on their side relaxedly.

I usually need Ougwee's help when clipping the nails of the two very troublesome cats.

Momo usually gets all panicky when Ougwee carries him for his nail clipping session,
as if a fire broke out right behind him.

Occasionally he attempts his Momo Super Propel kungfu skill and launchpads off Ougwee's arms as soon as he is able to

Apparently Miaomiao's wrath was directed at me last night.

Ougwee was carrying her,
I was bending trying to cut her nails
When out of the corner of my eye
I saw her paw preparing to lift up,
to whack the head in front of her.

The cat got caught red-pawed and put her paw back down.

After that she did the prepare to whack someone's head action again.

All these happened while she was making her my-mama-is-going-to murder-me heartwenching meows

After that she sat behind the television,
glaring in her one o' clock direction,
where I happened to be standing.

I don't know if she was glaring glaring at me,
but she looked like she was doing that

Pointed this out to Ougwee
and she called Miaomiao's name
to turn the cat's radar somewhere else.

After three seconds Miaomiao turned her head back to her one o' clock position and resumed her Miaomiao glare.

Cookie Monster's bald fur patches had finally disappeared,
cos the fur grew back and covered the holes.

Two days ago he got about 5 holes in his fur,
including one under his chin.

Thing is, he seems to idolise Momo too much.

How the cats wake us up

Miaomiao

When she is in a good mood:
She would use her head to gently bump against the arm. Sometimes she forget she is supposed to wake the person up. So she slumps next to the sleeping person and falls asleep too.

When she is not in her best mood:
Quote: "NEOW NEOW! NEOW NEOW! ~~ ~~"

Pepper

Prance around the bed, giving his "Orwell!~" sound
which has a better effect of getting someone out of bed willingly.

His last last resort is to start digging around at the mattress,
which is often useful because we used to worry that he wanted to pee on the bed.

Momo

Position himself very nicely beside the sleeping head.

And.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

On occasions he finds a support (eg: railing) to stand very straightly on his 2 feet,
then AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I think he projects his voice better that way

If your half-opened eyes catch him walking towards your feet,
then you had better cover them with your blanket ASAP.

His next step is to bite the toe so that you will be jolted awake.

Cookie Monster

He usually keeps with the standard procedure of whining like a poor kid.

Quote: Aowww..... HMMPhhhh..
(I don't really know how to spell the sound, it just feels like a little kid whining to his mama)

Sometimes he suddenly feels that he had a deprived childhood
and starts pouncing on the sleeping person's legs.

So he sits beside the legs.

He counts mentally: "One, Two and Three!"

Then jumps and bites the thigh

"One, Two and Three!". Again.

"One, Two and Three!". Again.

His way of gaining practice in pouncing at a mother cat's tail

Problem solved!

After 3 years of keeping the windows closed
and at the same time suffocating in our house,
all because The Miaomiao likes to climb out to the corridor
to roll in the dust whenever we are not looking....

We finally solved the problem,
with a mere S$2!!

We wasn't too keen on meshing up the whole window,
making our house look like a prison and all,
so we'd been closing the windows quite a lot.

One fine day Ougwee and I were looking around in Daiso,
then we were in the gardening section where they had a lot of nice little fences,
then we sort of got some inspiration.

Why not just cover a fraction of the window?
Would it work?

Anyway we didn't buy that fence thins in the end.
We bought a simple metal bar about 50 by 30cm,
and blocked just that section of the window

Miaomiao can only go out by that section we noticed,
due to some angle issue and probably she is getting plump
so she can't go some other way haha!

Happy 3rd Birthday Pepper!

The day when the box of kittens containing Pepper
(who farts into others' face when he sneezes)
came into the house.

So.

5 Things Pepper should improve on

1. Stop going over to bully Cookie Monster just because Cookie Monster is a sore eye to him (and probably because Cookie Monster doesn't retaliate)

2. Refrain from putting his two front paws out straight (really straight, like two wooden sticks) to push against us when we carry him. Not that we are trying to get fresh with him or what right?

3. Look straight into the camera when we take a photo of him and not stare at one thousand other places. Apparently he seems to know that the THING is a camera, be it if we are holding an iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy S2 or a digital camera.

4.Stop fishing out dirty cotton buds from the bin. (I'm very proud to point out that Pepper has stopped doing this)

5. He should be less picky about where to eat. To make him eat we actually have to let him eat at places such as on the table, in the bedroom etc. He doesn't really like to eat near the others. Actually this is partly because of the fact that he doesn't smack Momo's face when Momo tries to take from his plate. He would just quietly walk away :(

Jealousy

Peppper probably feels jealous of Cookie Monster.
He is such a docile cat
but lately he taken to challenging Cookie Monster,
just going over and meowing weirdly at him.\

Occasionally he slaps Cookie Monster with his paw,
with "piak" sounds being heard.

Depending on Cookie Monster's mood,
he retaliates sometimes
(or maybe he decides not to retaliate when Mama is looking)

So now Pepper has the most number of frenemies,
since he can't get along with both Momo and Cookie Monster.

Update on the cats' condition

Thanksfully the hoarse meowing by Miaomiao the other day
is most probably just to intimidate me.

The next day, her meowing was back to her normal "Nyak neow!"

*Phew*

As for Pepper's diarrhea,
we fasted him for a day
(this is from a colleague's experience
whose dog phewed liquid fudgy poo all over the living room.
Thanksfully cats have litter trays)
and he only had plain water,
sort of to "clean out" his stomach.

Because of work, we can't really monitor the litter tray closely
to know who is pooing what and who is not pooing and whats not,
but anyway Pepper don't seem to have so watery poo anymore.

Cookie Monster's bare skin patch seems to be recovering!
The scab on his scabby red patch seems to have dropped off a bit,
revealing normal white skin coat beneath.

Let's hope that the skin patch will still be fertile for fur to grow back

As long as Mama is happy...

We now not only have Miaomiao to shut Momo up
when he is getting too noisy
(by walking over to him when he does his "AHHHH!!"
and whacking his head),

We also have Pepper to stop Miaomiao when
she tries to climb out through the corridor window!

Pepper will quickly climb up to the television,
where Miaomiao is,
and thwart her plans by hitting at her with his paw.

I think he observed that we always stop her when she does that,
so him being a mummy's boy, helps us to stop Miaomiao too.. :)

"See you around guys!"

Now Cookie monster has a red bald patch on his back, and a few patches are losing hair too.
Pepper is having runny stools, which some white precipitate in it. 5th day already.

Cloudy Eye

We took Cookie Monster to the vet today,
to see if anything could be done about his cloudy eye.

Cookie Monster was diagnosed with nuclear sclerosis
(Again, another term which made me went ???)

That explained the few times when he tried to jump onto a surface,
but missed and fell somewhere else.

It's quite advanced so he probably can't really see with his right eye.
However, the vet assured us that he will be able to cope
using the vision of his left eye.

There's nothing we can do now,
except to drip eye drops for the next few months
and see if the cloudiness clears a little.

Anyway we asked the vet for an estimate of Cookie Monster's age,
and it was about 2-3 years old.

So Momo is probably no longer Cookie Monster's 大哄 (Big Brother),
though Cookie Monster still follows him around like a younger brother

Pepper's last dose

Finally last dose of tablet antibiotics for Pepper!
I opened the cupboard to take out his medication.

Pepper, having taking medicine once too many times,
knew that medicine time was coming
and quickly hid under the bed.

What to do?
Beg him to come out with a promise of Burp treat for all the four cats if he takes his medicine.
So Pepper was like...

Okay I shall sacrifice myself...

Luckily such tricks still work on him.
Spent quite a while feeding him the tablet,
then I turned to see the table,
where I left the treat.

GONE.

Should I be surprised?
As expected,
Momo had stolen the treat
and took it to a corner
trying to bite the packaging open.

So for the next minute,
I was like some pathetic idiot,
trying to wrench the Burp packet
out from the mouth of a growling Momo.

Momo likes to growl when he doesn't want to give up a precious thing of his.
A friend of mine said that he is more of a dog than a cat.

After that idiotic pathetic minute
I finally managed to get back
a saliva-laden treat packet

Okay,
next to keep my promise to Pepper!
And the growling cat thief gets it too.

He should have learnt to wait.

The food thieves

Just fed Pepper his 5th dose of revolting liquid,

so he still has one more dose to go.

The next 1 week or so is only the tablet,

Which should be more bearable for him.

Anyway, I took out the packet of Burp treat from the refrigerator,

showed it to Pepper,

and then placed it on the table nearby.

Sort of like a little motivation for Pepper.

Then I started syringing the revolting liquid into his mouth.

Amid all the struggling and frothing saliva from Pepper,

we turned and look.

Where is the treat?

Taken by one of the greedy pigs into the bedroom for their picnic.

Thanksfully their plan was thwarted

Update on Pepper's condition

Day 3 since Pepper went to the vet.

Very thanksfully after Pepper tried unsuccessfully to pee at night on day 1,

he finally let out a decent amount of pee on day 2.

It's sick to look so closely at your cat when he pees in the litter tray,

but that was what I did.

Yay! He peed!

Whatsapped the picture of pee mixed with litter to Emily.

Even sicker right. :P

Not sure if he peed today though...

The liquid antibiotics is really making Pepper's life hellish.

It's so bitter and revolting that he struggles violently and keep trying to expel the antibiotics from his mouth,

that his mouth is a whole mess of frothy saliva

We feel so guilty forcing medicine into his mouth,

but we really have to do it.

Pepper learns fast.

By Day 3 he realised that the revoltig liquid comes right after dinner.

The moment we served him fussy cat

he immediately hid under the bed so we could not get him.

In the end we used Burp treat to lure him out.

Pepper: "Bad Mamas..."

Pepper can't pee.. ;(

Ougwee and I happened to be sitting in the living room, watching television,
when Pepper came to use the litter tray in front of us.

He squatted over the litter and no urine came out.
Then after that he visited the litter tray a few times with the same outcome.

Luckily we noticed it then,
because with four cats in the house,
it's kind of hard to keep track of who peed and who did not.

The next morning it was still the same.
He kept trying to urine but no urine, if not only a dot of urine came out.

We googled about such conditions online.
Seeing what were written about such conditions,
we really didn't dare to delay taking him to the vet.
Luckily we could take the afternoon off at short notice.

Perhaps now that we are using a carrier bag (instead of a normal animal carrier),
and perhaps due to Pepper's aura,
we didn't really get a lot of taxi drivers who couldn't see us standing on the kerb,
and managed to get a cab pretty fast to and from the vet.

Dr Vanessa still remembers Pepper! (and the Momo who terrorised Pepper then)

Luckily we promptly took him to the vet.
A urine catheter was inserted into his eh-hem,
and the urine which was extracted was bloody.

Even when Dr Vanessa kept assuring us that he was sedated
and would not feel any pain,
we still felt quite *heartpain* seeing him lie so lifelessly on the surgery table.
Because he was mildly sedated and semi-conscious,
his mouth was partly open and his tongue lolled to one side of his mouth.
Drool was coming out of his mouth and his eyes had this funny orientation about them.

Pepper recovering from sedation

Pepper was prescribed two antibiotics, one in tablet form and the other liquid.
Good luck to us in ensuring that all of it actually ends up in his mouth.

Standard Operating Protocol #1

Standard Operating Protocol when Momo visits litter tray:

1. Observe subject's sense of urgency. If he is digging with normal speed, let him continue as per normal. If he is digging faster than usual, be prepared for SOP#1 immediately.

2. *OPTIONAL: Stuff your nostrils with two pieces of tissue papers to prevent intoxification

3. If Popo is present, she evacuates to kitchen immediately. (Popo does not need to be advised on what to do, she is usually the first to evacuate herself)

4. With the best speed you have, quickly place a plastic bag right under subject before he defecates.

5. With even better speed, tie up the plastic bag immediately to prevent possible gas intoxification.

6. With the best-est speed, SPRINT to the rubbish chute and hurl the bag down.

7. Remember to open the window to allow for ventilation.

8. Lastly, remember to look as if Momo's poo smells okay (or nice if you are better at acting), so as not to hurt his feelings.

"NEOW NEOW!"

Momo kept quiet after that.

Cookie Monster's grocery list

(as much as these two items don't look very feline-y)

Leopard-print plushie (with a squeakie thing inside):
His bite toy since he likes to keep biting Momo,
so I guess I should get him an alternative

White bin:
His irritating habit of jumping up the kitchen sink
to steal food from the bin (without a cover),
which had caused him to lose quite a bit of brownie points with Popo.

Hope this swing-cover bin will stop him from stealing food leftovers

Momo's soft spot

It's so sweet to see Momo's soft spot for Cookie Monster.

Perhaps it's because when Momo finally got a wrestle buddy to play with when Cookie came;

in the past Miaomiao and Pepper would get angry if he tried to play rough with them like that.

With any other cat Momo would never had hesitate to snitch from their plate.

In Miaomiao's case, Momo stopped trying because every time he tried to snitch, he got a whack on his head.

Back to the main point,

Cookie is not that defensive over his food,

but yet Momo will never snatch his food.

Instead, he would just sit nearby and watch,

Even though he is quite obviously raring to eat up the food.

The bestest Big Brother to Cookie Monster :)

Monkey

Condition of the collars (Red and Blue) after Miaomiao and Pepper wore them for a few months

Condition of Cookie Monster's collar after wearing it for about 2 months

You see why Popo and I always call him "Monkey"...

(Very) Delayed post

(Vaccination visit in Early March)

So Miaomiao and Momo went for their vaccination last week.

Emily brought them, one at a time, to the vet,

as Ougwee and I were both working.

Miaomiao's visit was rather okay.

However as usual she refused to come out of the carrier bag.

Luckily this time she was in the zippable carrier bag

all Emily had to do was to unzip the bag,

exposing the hiding Miaomiao to the vet

Much better than previous visits where we had to (rather unglamly ) dismantle the whole carrier to get her out

Momo was less lucky.

Due to a previous experience

which the then 2 month old Momo

caused the vet assistant's finger to bleed,

Emily warned that Momo might be a little hard to handled.

Which frightened the vet pretty much.

So the vet, instead of using the normal hand method
to feed Momo his deworming pill,
decided to use a tweezer to place the pill into his mouth
(and I'm guessing RIGHT into his mouth,
since that's what you need to do to make sure they swallow the pill)

Momo got so traumatised that a HUGE (relative to his mouth) metal thing
was pushed into his mouth like that
After that he was stunned for quite a while...

Poor cat...

The March holidays

It's sweet that Momo makes sure Emily gets up for school every morning.

But seeing that it's the March holidays now,

I only can say... Sighs..

The thing about Momo is that

he calls at 5:35am in the morning.

But no, Mama is still not waking up.

So he INSISTS that Mama must not skive

And continues trying to wake her up.

So I get woken up too :(
